Gaslamp illuminations on the premises of Henry Poole & Company, 38 Savile Row, to commemorate the State Visit of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie of France, April 1855.

In 1855, Napoleon III was welcomed to Henry Poole & Company on 38 Savile Row with a spectacular display. The street was adorned with tricolour French flags and illuminated by a dramatic gas lit depiction of the Emperor’s iconic Napoleonic Eagle. The display was one of the first of its kind and drew crowds from across London who gathered to witness the event. Prints of the illustrations created to commemorate the occasion have hung proudly in the Henry Poole fitting rooms ever since, preserving the memory of the celebration nearly two centuries later.
