“William Collins Whitney (1841-1904) was a finance and founding father of the Whitney family’s immense fortune. His aptitude for accumulating wealth was matched by a talent to charm his way into Manhattan society, controlled in the late 19th century by the arbiter of taste Mrs Astor. William Whitney could trace his family’s descent back to William Bradford, who had sailed to America on the Mayflower in 1620 and settled in Massachusetts.
