The relationship between Winston Churchill and Henry Poole & Co, is a remarkable example of the link between political grandeur and classic British craftsmanship. As one of our most loyal clients, Churchill trusted us to craft garments that captured his dynamic personality and met the demands of his public life.
Churchill’s association with Henry Poole & Co began early in his career, when he first sought our expertise in connection with costly Ministerial Uniform. Renowned for our precision and attention to detail, Henry Poole became Churchill’s preferred tailor for clothing, creating much of his wardrobe, including even his artists’ overalls, from 1905 until his death 60 years later in 1965.
The relationship between Churchill and Henry Poole & Co is a testament to the tailor’s enduring reputation as the epicentre of bespoke craftsmanship on Savile Row. Churchill’s trust in our work helped shape his public image, reinforcing Henry Poole’s legacy as the cornerstone of British sartorial excellence. This partnership remains a celebrated chapter in the history of both Churchill and of Savile Row.
To mark the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston’s birth we recently hosted a dinner in collaboration with Gentlemen’s Journal, the men’s luxury lifestyle magazine and Louis Roederer, the esteemed family-run champagne house. Henry Poole & Co’s front shop was the perfect backdrop for the dinner and the event featured a display of several historical garments commissioned for Churchill throughout his life, including The Privy Council Uniforms, The Royal Yacht Squadron Uniform and a copy the British Warm overcoat as worn by Churchill at the Yalta Conference in 1945 .
Guests enjoyed a delectable selection of dishes courtesy of William Deal and his company, Archie’s Food, alongside notable attendees such as Ms. Jenny Churchill, George, Marquess of Blanford, Mr. Laurence Geller CBE, Kirby Allison, George Repard and Harry Jarman, among others.
To further celebrate what would have been Churchill’s 150th birthday, we collaborated with the International Churchill Society (ICS) to create a signature pair of cufflinks. During their 56-year marriage, Winston and Clementine Churchill exchanged regular correspondence, often ending their letters with simple sketches of their pet names for each other—he was her “pug” and she his “cat.” Made from either rhodium or gilt-plated metal, the cufflinks feature charming doodles of a ‘pug’ and a ‘cat’ set within a cobalt blue glass enamel ground, taken directly from the motifs contained within their letters. These exclusive cufflinks are available for purchase in-store at 15 Savile Row or on the Henry Poole & Co website.

We were thrilled to collaborate again with Mr. Kirby Allison, who has recently launched a three-part mini-series titled The Fabric of a British Icon on his YouTube channel, featuring our Managing Director, Mr. Simon Cundey. The series begins at Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, and each episode delves into Churchill’s connections with the brands he cherished most, including luxury perfumer Floris, hatmakers Lock & Co, and Pol Roger, his favourite champagne house. The series uncovers how quality, tradition, and refinement played a role in shaping Churchill’s extraordinary life and legacy. Henry Poole & Co will feature as the series continues with footage of the celebratory dinner included within the last episode.
